San Antonio ISD marked the completion of Phase 1 of Bond 2020 improvements at Schenck Elementary School with a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 2.
The ceremony celebrated upgrades designed to modernize the campus and create expanded academic and extracurricular spaces for students. Schenck Principal Dr. Virginia Parker served as emcee. Speakers included Trustee Jacob Ramos, the SAISD Single Member District 3 board representative; SAISD Superintendent Dr. Adrian Bustillos; and Schenck Elementary Student Ambassadors Jayliana Walker and Amy Aguilera.
Schenck’s ballet folklorico group and student choir performed during the ceremony. Guests were also able to tour the new spaces after the event and received free school supplies courtesy of HEB.
Completed work includes a new two-story building with a library, main classrooms, art and music rooms, a makerspace, community room and learning commons. The project also added a new campus entrance and administrative area, new drop-off and pick-up locations, and outdoor spaces.
Other improvements include kitchen and equipment upgrades, a relocated central plant, and updates to HVAC, technology and security systems.
The completed work represents the first phase of Bond 2020 commitments for Schenck Elementary and is part of a districtwide effort to improve SAISD facilities. The school will also receive a new annex, which is currently under construction.
Schenck first opened in 1955. The campus later received an annex in 1964, followed by a gymnasium, special education and early childhood classrooms, a playground and a modern cafeteria through the 1997 Bond. The school’s stated vision is equity and excellence for all students.
