The San Antonio Humane Society is encouraging pet owners to kick off the new year by scheduling spay and neuter appointments, highlighting both the health benefits for pets and the positive impact on the community.

Spaying and neutering pets can significantly improve their quality of life. According to the Humane Society, altered pets are more likely to live longer, healthier lives and face a reduced risk of certain cancers and tumors. The procedure can also help curb unwanted behaviors such as roaming, aggression, and territory marking, making pets safer and easier to manage at home.

Beyond individual benefits, spaying and neutering plays a critical role in addressing animal overpopulation. By preventing unplanned litters, pet owners help reduce the number of animals entering shelters and increase the chances for every pet to find a loving home.

To make services more accessible, the San Antonio Humane Society currently has appointments available throughout January, including dates tied to its popular “What Would Mary Do?” promotion, with booking open on January 15, January 22, and January 29. In addition, qualifying residents may be eligible for reduced-cost services through the organization’s Zip Code Grant program, which helps expand access to spay and neuter care in designated areas.

Pet owners are encouraged to schedule early, as appointments can fill quickly. Taking this step now not only supports your pet’s long-term health, but also strengthens the wellbeing of the entire community.
