San Antonio residents can learn about lead safety, home health and weatherization resources at the Day of the Living Lead and Weatherization Mash, a Halloween-themed community event hosted by the City of San Antonio.
The event will take place Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Las Palmas Library, 515 Castroville Road. Families are encouraged to bring household items, including pottery and toys, to be tested for lead.
Organized by the City’s Neighborhood and Housing Services Department in partnership with City Council District 5 and the Alamo Area Council of Governments, the event will kick off Lead Awareness Week. Activities will include educational opportunities, a costume contest, food distribution in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank, door prizes and information about programs designed to help make homes healthier and safer.
The event is focused on helping families understand risks associated with lead-based paint and connect with resources that support safer homes. City officials highlighted the importance of lead-safety information for families, especially those with children younger than 5.
The event also addresses the needs of residents living in older homes. Councilmember Teri Castillo said the Historic Westside’s older homes are an important part of the community’s character and that access to home-safety resources can help protect the people who live in them while preserving those homes.
The City describes the event as family-friendly and welcoming for neighbors seeking information about lead safety, weatherization and available housing resources.
