San Antonio City Council approved the San Antonio Water System’s proposed rate adjustment. District 8 Councilmember Ivalis Meza Gonzalez said the decision weighed rising household costs against the need to invest in aging infrastructure.

San Antonio City Council approved the San Antonio Water System’s proposed rate adjustment, with District 8 Councilmember Ivalis Meza Gonzalez voting in favor of the measure.

In a statement released October 8, Gonzalez acknowledged the impact higher utility rates can have on residents as families manage rising costs and household budgets. She said the decision was difficult because any increase creates an added burden for San Antonio residents.

Gonzalez also pointed to the need for continued investment in the city’s aging water and wastewater infrastructure. She said delaying those investments could lead to more costly repairs, service disruptions and greater financial burdens in the future.

As San Antonio continues to grow, Gonzalez said the city has a responsibility to maintain infrastructure that is safe, reliable and able to meet community needs.

She also said she remains committed to holding the San Antonio Water System accountable for its investments, ensuring ratepayers are treated fairly and working toward reliable and resilient water services for District 8 and San Antonio.
