Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones said San Antonio’s new data center review process will allow City Council to consider each application. She also outlined standards involving transparency, public health and property values.

San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones said the City Council’s decision to create a new process for considering data center applications will give the council an opportunity to review each proposal.

The mayor released the statement on October 29, 2026, after the council passed the new process. Jones called the measure “an important safeguard” as the data center industry changes rapidly and commended Councilman Ric Galvan’s leadership.

“Today, we took a step forward to ensure City Council has the opportunity to review each data center application, and that is an important safeguard given how quickly this industry is changing,” Jones said.

The mayor also said provisions from her office focused on transparency, public health and property values were not included in the resolution. She said those priorities will guide her office’s standards when individual data center applications are reviewed.

“While my provisions focused on increasing transparency, protecting public health, and protecting property values were not included in today’s resolution, they will serve as my office’s standards when each data center application is reviewed,” Jones said.

Jones added that San Antonio must balance economic and national security needs with quality-of-life and public health protections adopted by other communities when zoning data centers.
